Seven Tips for Defeating Fear and Gaining Courage for Business Success
Conquering Fear to Ensure Self-Confidence and Success
“If you wish to eliminate fear- focus on courage.” Charles Haanal author of The Master Key System of Success
A little fear can be a good thing. It can serve to protect you from harm or warn you of impending danger. Too much fear can be fatal to your success in business and in life.
The following are seven tips to help you defeat fear and gain courage:
1. Relax – To gain courage and defeat fear it is essential that you learn to relax. Fear tends to lose its grip on us when we are physically and mentally relaxed. There are many ways to relax such as by exercise, yoga, meditation, massage, peaceful music, deep breathing or prayer. You must find the method that works best for you. Discovering how to relax will improve your health, make you more productive and will also help you to decrease feelings of fear and anxiety.
2. Desensitize Yourself - In the world of Psychology desensitization may be described as a way of facing our fears gradually and in small steps until the fear becomes manageable. For example I was able to conquer my fear of speaking before large audiences by giving talks to small groups of people and gradually working myself up to larger and larger groups of people. By succeeding in small increments I was able to gradually build my self confidence. You can also build your self confidence and conquer fear by taking small successful steps towards your goal.
3. Discover the truth in fearful situations. Charles Haanal states that truth destroys error just as light destroys darkness. Most of our fears are based on an inaccurate assessment of situation that causes fear. If we discover the truth our fear will fade. For example, if suddenly I told you that there was a deadly poisonous snake at your feet your heart would race, your adrenaline would make you more alert, you would start breathing more rapidly and you would start sweating profusely. But, as soon as you found out that there really was no snake, you would immediately begin to relax and all of your bodily functions would return to normal. In this example discovering the truth has freed you from your fear. As the Bible states “The truth shall set you free.”
4. Guard Your Mind - Remember to keep out of your mind all negative or fearful thoughts that do not add anything to your success in business or in life. Replace thoughts of criticism with thoughts of acceptance. Replace thoughts of illness with thoughts of health. Replace thoughts of failure with thoughts of success. Replace thoughts of poverty with thoughts of wealth. Replace thoughts of fear with thoughts of courage.
5. Use Affirmations - Repeat positive and truthful affirmations. Affirmations may be used to influence your subconscious mind and to increase your faith that you can overcome feelings of fear and succeed in business and life. If for example you fear failing in business. Repeat to yourself a positive affirmation such as: I am succeeding in business, each day I am learning more and more about how to serve my customers better. My business is providing people with solutions to their needs and I am making lots of money in return because I deserve it. I am a success. 6. Visualize - It is necessary to mentally see yourself succeeding in what is perceived by you to be a fearful situation. For example if you fear failing in business. Repeatedly see yourself succeeding in business. See the customers coming to purchase your products and see them using and enjoying your products or services. Repeating this mental picture will allow your subconscious mind to reveal to you the ways and means to make it a reality. Each successful visualization will increase your faith and in turn decrease your fear.
7. Practice Gratitude – be grateful for the courage that you already have gained in life and realize that by practicing gratitude your courage will be increased and your fears will be lessened.
